Here is a thing most homeowners never get told: the mortar between your bricks was designed to be the part that wears out. It is softer than the brick on purpose, the sacrificial layer that absorbs the stress so the brick does not have to. The system works beautifully with one condition attached: somebody has to renew the mortar when its shift is over. Skip that, and the damage promotion works its way up to the bricks themselves, and brick repair costs multiples of mortar repair.
What tuckpointing involves
Tuckpointing, also called repointing, is the renewal of those joints. Done properly it is careful, patient work:
- The failed mortar is ground out to sound depth, not just skimmed at the surface
- New mortar is mixed to suit the original in strength and tinted to sit beside it without announcing the repair
- Joints are packed full by hand and tooled to match the existing profile
- The finished wall gets cleaned so the only evidence of our visit is a chimney that stopped leaking
That surface-skim shortcut deserves a warning: a thin smear of new mortar over failed joints looks fine for a season and peels off by the second spring. If a bid seems too quick and too cheap, that is usually what is being bid.
Freeze-thaw and Front Range mortar
Mortar in this climate lives a hard life. Moisture soaks the joints, freezes the same night, and pries them open crystal by crystal, then wind scours the loosened sand away. South and west faces get the worst of it, cooking in afternoon sun then freezing after dark. It is why a Thornton chimney can need pointing while the same-age chimney in a gentler state has never been touched.
Reading your own chimney
- Run a key across a joint: if it powders or trenches, the mortar is done
- Look for gaps or shadow lines where mortar has fallen out entirely
- Check the flower beds below for crumbs of sandy debris
- White staining bleeding across the brick means water is moving through the wall

How long does tuckpointing last?
Done to sound depth with a proper mix, decades. It is one of the best value-per-dollar repairs in all of masonry, which is why we would rather point your chimney this year than rebuild it in five.
Can I tuckpoint my own chimney?
Ground-level garden walls, maybe. A chimney adds roof work, grinding without cutting the brick, mortar chemistry and joint tooling, all at height. It is honestly a trade skill, and the penalty for learning it on your own chimney is steep.
Do you point the whole chimney or just the bad spots?
Whatever the wall actually needs. Often the weather faces need full attention while the sheltered sides have years left, and we quote it exactly that way, by the joint, not by the fear.
